Culvert installation is where a driveway either gets done right or gets done twice. EMCO Builders installs and replaces driveway culverts across Baldwin County, Mobile County and across South Alabama: pipe sized to the ditch and the water it carries, set at the grade that keeps it flowing, and backfilled and compacted so the drive over it doesn't sink. Most of the washed-out entrances we see failed at the pipe, not the surface.
A culvert job here has to respect our rain. This coast takes some of the heaviest rainfall in the country, and a pipe that's too small, too high, or laid flat backs water into the ditch until it finds a way over your drive. We cut the ditch line, set the pipe, armor the ends, and tie it into the driveway and the grade so the whole entrance sheds water instead of fighting it.

Almost every rural drive in Baldwin and Mobile County crosses a roadside ditch, and the county expects that ditch to keep flowing after your entrance goes in. We size the pipe to the ditch, set the flow line so water moves through instead of pooling at the ends, and build the entrance up over it. Where the entrance sits on a county right of way, we flag the road department's requirements early so the pipe that goes in is the one that stays.
The entrance is usually the first piece of a bigger job: a gravel drive back to a homesite, a cleared lot that finally gets access, or a building pad that needs trucks in and out. We build the culvert and the drive as one job so the grades agree with each other from the ditch to the slab.
Culverts fail in slow motion. A crushed end from a heavy truck, rust through the invert, silt packing the barrel, or a pipe that was undersized on day one: the drive starts holding water at the entrance, the gravel washes into the road, and every storm makes it worse. We dig out the old pipe, correct what made it fail, and set new pipe at the size and grade the ditch actually needs.
Replacement is also the moment to fix the entrance itself. If the approach has rutted or the washout has eaten the shoulders, we rebuild the entrance over the new pipe with a proper base and crown so the repair holds. The goal is an entrance you stop thinking about, in any weather.
Driveway entrances get the attention, but pipe earns its keep anywhere water has to pass under something you drive on. A long drive that crosses a low spot, a farm lane that cuts across a drainage path, a trail to the back of the property: a cross drain under it keeps the water moving and the surface intact. We read where the water wants to go and put the pipe where it does the most good.
Culvert work ties straight into our excavation and drainage work, so a ditch that needs reshaping or a French drain that needs to carry water to the pipe gets handled in the same visit. One plan for the water beats three separate patches.
